Sun's rays streamed through the cracks in the walls of the nursery, bouncing off the rock inside. Reflections of a sleeping cat could be seen, her chest slowly rising and falling. The black and white she-cat soon awoke, and looked at the sky through the cracks.
"The sun is up... and so am I" She said with a quiet purr of amusement. Glancing down at the sleeping bundle next ot her, a warm smile crossed over her face.
"You are my life, little one." She whispered to the kit, rasping her tongue gently over her, trying not to disturb the kit. Nuzzling it with her jaw, she turned as a noise was heard outside.
"I brought you fresh-kill Fallenstep." Said a calico warrior. In his jaws was the dead body of a scrawny brown mouse.
"Thank you Amberstone. You may go now." She said with a hint of edge to her voice. Being a mother meant she was protective and nothing would stop her from doing just that. She picked apart the mouse, chewing softly while watching the young body next to her sleep.

Lavenderkit yawned and opened her blue-green eyes. Her vision was blurry, as it always was when she awoke this early. She could here Fallenstep's words, and she knew they were true. She was her life. The black she-kit knew everything about her adoptive mother, and she liked it that way. Her excessive knowledge made up for her disability. Without it, she'd actually have no comfort.
Letting out a yawn, she snuggled in closer to Fallenstep's belly. The soft fur there was so warm, and comfortable, that she nearly slipped back into slumber. But she awoke again with a start when she remembered the horrors that haunted her every time she closed her eyes.

Swiping her tongue over her lips, she let out a sigh. Her tail twitched from side to side as she glanced around the half-light nursery.
"Seems empty..." Fallenstep realized that no one but herself and Lavenderkit had been in here and it made her nervous. She felt movement down near her belly andwatched LAvenderkit pen her eyes.
"Morning little one. Sleep well?" She said in a calm, caring tone while licking the kit between her ears. She let her tail wrap around Lavenderkit, making sure she was warm

Tipping her head back as far as possible, Lavenderkit flicked her tail once, trying to look happy. She didn't like to lie. It was so unappealing, but in order to keep everyone else at ease, she felt it was necessary. She was happy. Happy was when she was awake and her past couldn't taunt and tease her anymore. She was absolutely elated when she could be normal, when she didn't have to feel like she could never really live.
Using her tail again, she gestured towards the entrance to the nursery, and pointed it upwards, towards the sun. She pretended to shiver. Basking in the sunlight would be relaxing. Maybe she could think of something else. Something less frightening.

Fallenstep watched the movements of Lavenderkit's tail with determination. She was going to figure out what the kit wanted to do.
"Let's see. You pointed to the nursery entrance and then the sun. Hmm..." She thought for a moment before picking up the kit in her jaws, careful not to discomfort her and headed out of hte nursery.
The sun was climbing into the sky, rays warming aprts of the ground. Setting Lavenderkit down in a sunny spot, she let a satisfied look cross her face.
"This is what you wanted, right?" She questioned the young one while laying upon the frozen ground. sHe shivered at the touch, but the sun soon warmed her fur.

Cherrykit watched the two cats communicate. He loved watching the she-cat. Most of the time he could understand what she was doing, but half the time it was a great big puzzle. He couldn't understand why cats didn't think Lavenderkit would make a good warrior. She had great balance and he knew that one day she would be better than him.
He watched as his uncle passed towards the entrance of the camp. 'Looking for herbs,' he thought as the tom disappeared through the bramble. He hated doing "chores" for his uncle. It was odd to think that the tom was just trying to keep him safe. Cherrypaw knew he loved him, but confiding him to the medicine cat den would do no good with his warrior training. Sadly, no matter how his uncle tried, Cherrypaw would always be a warrior at heart.
He looked at the she-cats and shivered at the thought of being cold. Laying down he watched the two, silently.

Satisfied, Lavenderkit lazily flicked her tail, signaling agreement. Fallenstep was better at this than she gave her credit for. Rolling in a patch of stray clover, the she-kit sighed in content. Being mute wasn't so bad. She only wished that she could remember life without it.
Standing up, she bounded to Fallenstep. Rubbing against her chest, she let out a purr. It was nice to be cared for, even when your future was darker than the coldest winter night.
Night.
She shuddered. Oh, how she hated that word.

Gently swatting at Lavenderkit's head, rolling the young kit around, she looked up and let out a meow of plesure.
"Why have you given me this? Am I now worthy to have happiness?" She questioned the sun and clouds, hoping they would send the message on. Scanning over camp, she watched Razormist pad out of camp. Always looking for herbs. sHe thought silently while her gaze landed on Cherrykit.
"Morning Cheryykit. How are you?" She said in a gentle voice, her eyes showing concern. Fallenstep always wanted the kits to be comfortable and know she would so anything to help them

Cherrykit looked up and just smiled. He felt no reason to waste his voice just quite yet. Soon Razorspring's teaching came to mind and remembered their talk about manners. 'Most cats liked to be talked to even if you are shy you should try and make conversation,' the thought ran through his head several times before he looked up at Fallenstep.
"I'm great, and you?" he asked politely and this time just looked at Lavenderkit and smiled. He shivered and quickly walked to the sunny spot Lavenderkit was sitting in. He hoped she wouldn't mind him.

Fallenstep watched Cherrykit join Lavenderkit, a smile creeping on the corners of her face. It was great to see them get along even wtih Lavenderkit's disability. Flashbacks came back to her of the day her name was changed all because of a limp. She still had it and the thought made her shudder.
"I am fine this morning. Beautiful day except for the bitter cold wind." She rested her head on her forepaws, careful to keep an eye on the two kits before her.

Lavenderkit quickly sat up and licked her chest fur. Other cats made her nervous. She didn't know Cherrykit all that well, but she scooted over so he could share the soft cushion of clover.
Lashing her tail in Cherrykit's direction, she assumed that he'd recognize the greeting. Then again, even the warriors had trouble distinguishing her expressions.
Sometimes being mute was bearable. Times like now made even the simplest communication impossible.

Cherrykit nodded and looked at Lavenderkit. He had to admit that she had great beauty, but wondered what happened to her real parents. Razorspring had taken care of her, but he had told him nothing of the night. Sighing he watched some dead leaves, that had manage to fall after the frost, float around with the wind.
"Lavenderkit, how are you today?" he asked hoping he'd be able to understand her mood.

How am I? In response, she purred unsteadily. All of her purrs were shaky; the damage done on her vocal chords had impaired not only her voice, but every sound she could make. She flicked her tail along Cherrykit's flank and tilted her head to one side. What about you?
She decided that she liked Cherrykit. He was nice, and didn't seem to think she was dumb, like some of the other cats in the valley did. She wished she could tell Fallenstep, or anyone, for that matter, about her past. Maybe then they'd know how hard it was for her.

Cherrykit purred back happy. Her touch had meant something. He looked into her eyes and finally found what she had said.
"I doing good. A little tired from my uncle's orders all the time. It's nice to get out of his den," he told her without a breath. He was beginning to talk a little more, but he knew that the talkativeness would disappear soon when warriors and apprentices would be around him.
